Counseling for Child Obesity

All parents want their children to be healthy and happy but often children (and teens) fall into unhealthy eating patterns. In addition, many children are not getting enough physical activity in their day. Some children begin to engage in emotional eating at an early age - using sugary, fatty or salty foods to soothe their emotional discomfort. When these circumstances are added together, it is easy for children to become overweight or obese. These children are at risk for a variety of health issues, negative self esteem and peer issues.

Parents worry that their child will be stigmatized because they are overweight. Children should never be made to feel bad about themselves because of their size. We do not want to send them messages that could backfire and contribute to the development of an eating disorder. But, we also do not want to ignore or enable an eating problem.

We understand that often parents of overweight and obese children have their own issues with eating and weight. At Arbor Counseling, we work with families to create healthy lifestyles for all family members, positive lifestyle change, and enhanced self-esteem in the child. We work to help the child feel positive about himself or herself in mind, body and spirit.
